The UbiB family has five mammalian members (ADCK1-5), which are classified as atypical kinases. COQ8A (ADCK3) is an UbiB protein associated with ubiquinone (Coenzyme Q, CoQ) biosynthesis and ataxia []. Although COQ8A was predicted to be a protein kinase, it lacks canonical protein kinase activity [, ]. Instead, COQ8A has ATPase activity and interacts with lipid CoQ intermediates [].
