The electroneutral cation-chloride-coupled cotransporter gene family (SLC12) consists of nine members and encompasses two major branches. One brach includes three genes (SLC12A1-SLC12A3) encoding two bumetanide-sensitive Na+-K+-2Cl- cotransporters (NKC) and a thiazide-sensitive Na+:Cl- cotransporter (NC). The second branch includes four genes (SLC12A4-7) encoding electroneutral K+-Cl- cotransporters (KCC). The transported substrates of the remaining two SLC12 family members, SLC12A8 and SLC12A9, are unknown [].This entry represents SLC12A9. No physiological role has been ascribed to SLC12A9 [, ].
