Serine incorporator (Serinc) 1-5 constitute a family of carrier proteins that incorporate serine into membranes and facilitates the synthesis of two serine-derived lipids, phosphatidylserine and sphingolipids. Serinc family members contain 11 transmembrane domains []. In the rat brain, expression of Serinc1 and Serinc2 mRNA is up-regulated by induced seizures, whereas Seric5 is down-regulated, indicating a novel mechanism linking neural activity and lipid biosynthesis.This entry represents Serinc5 (also known as Tpo1).
