Description: Fatty acid-binding proteins (FABPs) have been designated according to the first tissue they were isolated from: intestinal (I-FABP), liver (L-FABP), adipocyte(A-FABP), heart (H-FABP), ileal, myelin, brain, epidermal, and sperm. However, each of these FABPs may be expressed in more than one tissue. This entry includes Fatty acid-binding protein (FABP4) also known as Fatty acid-binding protein, adipocyte, and related fatty acid binding proteins. FABP4 is an adipose tissue-secreted adipokine implicated in the regulation of energetic metabolism and inflammation []. It is mainly expressed in adipocytes and macrophages and plays an important role in the development of insulin resistance and atherosclerosis in relation to metaflammation []. FABP4 can reversibly bind to fatty acids and other lipids with high affinities [].
