Ventral anterior homeobox 2 (Vax2) is a transcription factor expressed in the developing and mature retina. It has an important role in eye development, controlling the patterning of the eye dorsoventral axis [, , ]. Vax2 is also important for correct retinal function []. It regulates retinoic acid distribution and cone opsin expression in the vertebrate eye [].
