Description: PLAG1 and PLAG1 family members, PLAGL1 and PLAGL2, constitute a family of zinc finger proteins that recognise DNA and/or RNA. This entry includes PLAG1 and PLAGL2. Zinc finger protein PLAG1, also known as pleiomorphic adenoma gene 1 protein, is a transcription factor whose activation results in up-regulation of target genes, such as IGFII, leading to uncontrolled cell proliferation: when overexpressed in cultured cells, higher proliferation rate and transformation are observed. PLAG1 is a proto-oncogene whose ectopic expression can trigger the development of tumours, including pleomorphic adenomas of the salivary gland and lipoblastomas [, , ].
