Description: Solute carrier organic anion transporter family member 1C1 (SLCO1C1, also known as OATP1C1) belongs to the OATP family. It is a specific thyroid hormone transporter []. It mediates the transport of T4, rT3, T4 sulfate, estrone-3-sulfate (E1S), estradiol-17beta-glucuronide, and bromosulfophthalein. It is expressed in the Leydig cells of the testis and in brain capillaries in rat and mice, leading to the suggestion that Oatp1c1 is expressed at the blood-brain barrier []. The expression of SLCO1C1 and another key thyroid hormone transporter, MCT8, are regulated in a parallel manner during inflammation at the blood-brain barrier of rodents [].
