SIX6 is a homeodomain transcription factor involved in development of the mammalian neuroendocrine system. It also regulates transcription of gonadotrope-specific genes as gonadotrope cells differentiate []. It has been linked to glaucoma [, ].The human SIX protein family consists of six members (SIX1-SIX6), all of which contain two protein domains: a DNA binding homeobox domain and a SIX domain, which binds downstream effector molecules. They are thought to be transcription factors required for proper eye development [].
