Description: Solute carrier family 26 member 9 (SLC26A9) has been reported to have both a Cl- channel and a Cl-/HCO3- exchanger activity []. It also seems to exhibit a unique function among the SLC26 members, as its anion transport activity was shown to be coupled to cation transport (Na+/anion transport) [].SLC26A9 is predominantly expressed in the lung and stomach, and to a lower degree in kidney [, , ]. Inactivation of SLC26A9 in mice led to loss of gastric acid secretion []. In the airway, SLC26A9 mediated Cl- secretion in response to airway inflammation induced by IL-13 []. In the kidney, SLC26A9 is required for the regulation of both renal salt excretion and blood pressure [].
