The TRPM subfamily of mammalian TRP channels includes TRPM5, which is essential for the detection of bitter, sweet, and amino acid tastes []. TRPM5 forms a nonselective cation channel that is activated by intracellular Ca(2+) [, ]. In addition to the taste system, TRPM5 is expressed in chemosensory cells in the digestive tract, respiratory and olfactory systems. It is also found in pancreatic islets, where it contributes to insulin secretion [].
