Description: The TRPM subfamily of mammalian TRP channels includes TRPM5, which is essential for the detection of bitter, sweet, and amino acid tastes []. TRPM5 forms a nonselective cation channel that is activated by intracellular Ca(2+) [, ]. In addition to the taste system, TRPM5 is expressed in chemosensory cells in the digestive tract, respiratory and olfactory systems.
