Hemopexin (HPX) is the plasma protein with the highest binding affinity to haem among known proteins []. It binds haem and transports it to the liver for breakdown and iron recovery, after which the free HPX returns to the circulation []. It has been suggested that HPX is mainly responsible for the transportation of haem thus preventing both haem-catalysed oxidative damage and haem-bound iron loss [].
