Protein Domain
Type: Family
Description: Adducin is a cytoskeletal protein that regulates the assembly of the spectrin-actin subcortical membrane network []. Adducin is present as a heterotetramer formed by two alpha subunits non covalently linked to two beta or, alternatively, to two gamma subunits depending on the cell type. Each subunit is comprised of three regions: a NH2-terminal protease-resistant globular head region, a short connecting subdomain, and a protease-sensitive tail region. Adducin is a substrate for protein kinase A and C (PKA, PKC) and tyrosine kinase phosphorylation and is involved in calcium cycling control, cell-to-cell contact, signal transduction, and cell motility []. This entry represents the alpha-adducin. The alpha-adducin gene has been linked to blood pressure variations in Milan hypertensive rats and humans []. Mutated alpha-adducin can cause the reduction of the Na/K pump endocytic rate. Moreover, alpha-adducin interacts with clathrin and might play a role in clathrin-dependent endocytosis [, ].
