Description: Elf4 or MEF (myeloid Elf-1-like factor) is an ETS transcription factor that activates innate immunity-associated genes such as lysozyme [], human beta-defensin 2 [], interleukin-8 (IL-8) [], and type I interferon []. It plays a role in the development and function of natural killer and NK T-cells []. Elf4/MAF has oncogenic properties and contributes to malignant transformation by inhibiting both the p53 and p16/Rb pathways [, ]. It also promotes the transition of cells from G1 to S phase and enhances the movement of hemapotoietic stem cells out of a quiescent state (G0 phase) into the cell cycle [, ].
