Renalase is a FAD-dependent amine oxidase that catalyzes the oxidation of the less abundant 1,2-dihydro-beta-NAD(P) and 1,6-dihydro-beta-NAD(P) to form beta-NAD(P)+, activity that functions as an intracellular detoxification mechanism which alleviates inhibition of dehydrogenases by these compounds [, ]. In humans it is highly expressed in the kidneys and heart. It has been linked to chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease, and may serve as a potential drug target []. |
