It acts as a transcriptional repressor on minimal promoter containing muE3 enhancer sequence [[cite:PUB00055436]]and as a transcriptional transactivator on the proximal promoter region of the tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) E-box containing promoter [[cite:PUB00055437]]. It binds DNA in a homo or heterodimeric form with MITF and TFE3.
