Description: von Willebrand factor A domain-containing protein 1 (Vwa1, WARP) is expressed predominantly in chondrocytes [, ], where it interacts with collagen VI-containing microfibrils and might function as an adapter protein in the cartilage pericellular matrix []. It is also expressed in the vasculature of neural tissues, in basement membrane structures of the peripheral nervous system, and in skeletal and cardiac muscle []. Studies in mice indicate that WARP is not essential for basement membrane formation or musculoskeletal development, but it has critical roles in the structure and function of peripheral nerves [].
