Protein Coding Gene : Gpx2 glutathione peroxidase 2

Primary Identifier  MGI:106609 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  12 NCBI Gene Number  14776
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.1.0)

Enables glutathione peroxidase activity. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including negative regulation of inflammatory response to antigenic stimulus; response to symbiotic bacterium; and temperature homeostasis. Predicted to be located in cytosol; intercellular bridge; and mitotic spindle. Is expressed in several structures, including alimentary system; central nervous system; respiratory system; sensory organ; and urinary system. Orthologous to human GPX2 (glutathione peroxidase 2).
PHENOTYPE: Homozygotes for a targeted null allele appear normal, but double knockouts of Gpx1 and Gpx2 exhibit symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease, including perianal ulceration, growth retardation, and hypothermia, a condition that is sometimes fatal not observed in either single knockout.
