Protein Coding Gene : Ptgs2 prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2

Primary Identifier  MGI:97798 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  1 NCBI Gene Number  19225
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.0.0)

Enables heme binding activity; prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase activity; and protein homodimerization activity. Involved in several processes, including brown fat cell differentiation; cellular response to non-ionic osmotic stress; and regulation of inflammatory response. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including decidualization; prostaglandin secretion; and response to nematode. Located in cytoplasm; neuron projection; and nuclear membrane. Is expressed in several structures, including early embryo; limb long bone; nervous system; skin; and urinary system. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in several diseases, including Barrett's esophagus; arthritis (multiple); cardiovascular system disease (multiple); liver disease (multiple); and lung disease (multiple). Orthologous to human PTGS2 (prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2).
PHENOTYPE: Homozygous null mice exhibit increased perinatal mortality associated with frequent lack of closure and remodeling of the ductus arteriosus, background-sensitive kidney dysplasia with microcyst formation, and myocardial fibrosis. Mutant females show impaired fertility. [provided by MGI curators]
