abstractText  Full text of Mouse Genome contribution: 7. New W allele W73J. A new allele at the W locus, W73J, that occurred in DBA/2J in 1988, has the unusual feature that it interacts with both Wv/+ and Miwh/ + to produce black eyed white offspring in the F1. W73J/+ in combination with Wv/+ produced 6 black eyed white progeny W73J/Wv, 1 W73J/+, 3 +Wv, 4 + +/ 14, progeny. The 6 W73J/Wv progeny failed to breed. W73J/+ in combination with Miwh/+ produced 11 black eyed white W73J/+/+Miwh, 8 W73J +, 5 + Miwh, 8 + +/32. The W73J +/+ Miwh (black eyed white) when mated to C57BL/6J produced 10 W73J +, 6 + Miwh, 8 + +, 8 W73J Miwh/32. No interaction was found between W73J/+ and Sl/+. W73J in combination with Sl/+ produced 2 W73J/+, 3 + Sl, 4 + + and 2 W73J Sl. Neither of the W73J Sl animals was a black eyed white. Allelism at the W locus was confirmed by linkage tests with Hm in both repulsion and coupling crosses and by isoenzyme typing of alleles at the Pgm-1 locus. A backcross linkage test with Hm in repulsion produced 49 W73J +, 44 + Hm, 15 + +, 10 W73J Hm/118 for an RF of 21.19 +/- 4.30. A coupling backcross of W73J Hm/+ + produced 28 W73J Hm, 32 + +, 14 W73J +, 12 + Hm/86 for an RF of 30.23 +/- 4.95. A cross between DBA/2J-W73J carrying the Pgm-1b allele and C57BL/6J Pgm-1a gave a recombination estimate of 4.0 +/- 2.78 (2/50) between W73J and Pgm-1. This is in agreement with the published distance between the W locus and Pgm-1. Heterozygous W73J/+ have extensive white spotting dorsally and ventrally. Homozygotes have not been identified although a few dead offspring at birth and one severely anemic offspring that disappeared shortly after birth were seen. Fourteen of 14 W73J/- animals (offspring from W73J/+ x W73J/+ matings) have tested to be W73J/+ . Further work is in progress to confirm the homozygous phenotype. W73J has been placed on the C57BL/6J background. (Sweet, S. Cook, Davisson)
