Protein Coding Gene : Kpna2 karyopherin subunit alpha 2

Primary Identifier  MGI:103561 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  11 NCBI Gene Number  16647
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.1.0)

Enables DNA-binding transcription factor binding activity and nuclear import signal receptor activity. Involved in postsynapse to nucleus signaling pathway. Acts upstream of or within entry of viral genome into host nucleus through nuclear pore complex via importin; positive regulation of viral life cycle; and protein import into nucleus. Located in cytoplasmic stress granule. Is active in glutamatergic synapse and postsynaptic density. Is expressed in several structures, including alimentary system; central nervous system; genitourinary system; respiratory system; and sensory organ. Orthologous to human KPNA2 (karyopherin subunit alpha 2).
PHENOTYPE: Mice homozygous for a null allele exhibit male infertility, with reduced sperm motility and increased sperm abnormalities. Partial prenatal lethality is seen and males and females are smaller. [provided by MGI curators]
