Protein Coding Gene : Rgs14 regulator of G-protein signaling 14

Primary Identifier  MGI:1859709 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  13 NCBI Gene Number  51791
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.1.0)

Enables GTPase activating protein binding activity and GTPase activator activity. Involved in several processes, including learning or memory; regulation of synaptic plasticity; and zygote asymmetric cell division. Acts upstream of or within mitotic cell cycle. Located in several cellular components, including dendritic spine; microtubule cytoskeleton; and nuclear body. Is active in glutamatergic synapse and postsynaptic density. Is expressed in several structures, including cochlea; neural ectoderm; and placenta. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in nephrolithiasis. Orthologous to human RGS14 (regulator of G protein signaling 14).
PHENOTYPE: Homozygosity for one knockout allele results in failure to complete the first zygotic cell division. Another homozygous KO affects long-term potentiation in hippocampal neurons which leads to enhanced spatial learning and long-term memory. A third homozygous KO results in no obvious phenotype.
