abstractText  Full text of MNL contribution: 10. Induced dominant cataract mutations. Six mice with inherited cataracts were recovered following parental treatment with 250 mg/kg of the potent mutagen ethylnitrosourea. The dominant genes have been provisionally designated Lop4 (lens opacity-4). Lop-5, Lop-6, Lop-7, Lop-8 and Lop-9. However, Lop-6 and Lop-7 are probably identical since they were derived from the same mutagen-treated male. Cataract phenotypes are quite variable but Lop-4, Lop-5, Lop-6, Lop-7 and Lop-8 tend to produce nuclear or perinuclear lens opacities whereas Lop-9 opacities usually involve the lens cortex. Homozygous lines have not yet been established with certainty but matings, that produce entirely affected offspring, have been identified for Lop-6 and Lop-9. Linkage tests suggest that Lop-4 is located on chromosome 2, distal to agouti. The precise location is uncertain because Lop4 shows incomplete penetrance and variable expressivity. (West and Fisher)
