Protein Coding Gene : Oprm1 opioid receptor, mu 1

Primary Identifier  MGI:97441 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  10 NCBI Gene Number  18390
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.1.0)

Enables G protein-coupled opioid receptor activity. Involved in several processes, including G protein-coupled opioid receptor signaling pathway; presynaptic modulation of chemical synaptic transmission; and transmission of nerve impulse. Acts upstream of or within adenylate cyclase-activating dopamine receptor signaling pathway; adenylate cyclase-inhibiting G protein-coupled receptor signaling pathway; and locomotory behavior. Located in membrane. Is active in GABA-ergic synapse. Is expressed in several structures, including central nervous system; early conceptus; peripheral nervous system; retina inner nuclear layer; and uterus. Used to study autism spectrum disorder. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in several diseases, including alcohol dependence; alcohol use disorder; drug psychosis; opiate dependence (multiple); and withdrawal disorder (multiple). Orthologous to human OPRM1 (opioid receptor mu 1).
PHENOTYPE: Homozygotes for null mutations exhibit isoform dependent loss of behavioral and gastrointestinal opioid responses and may also show impaired spatial memory, heightened nociception, reduced locomotor activity, increased hematopoietic proliferation, and decreased male fertility.
