Protein Coding Gene : Klf4 Kruppel-like transcription factor 4 (gut)

Primary Identifier  MGI:1342287 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  4 NCBI Gene Number  16600
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.1.0)

Enables several functions, including DNA binding activity; DNA-binding transcription activator activity, RNA polymerase II-specific; and RNA polymerase II sequence-specific DNA-binding transcription factor recruiting activity. Involved in several processes, including establishment of skin barrier; fat cell differentiation; and positive regulation of transcription by RNA polymerase II. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including cellular response to leukemia inhibitory factor; epithelial cell differentiation; and regulation of blastocyst development. Located in cytoplasm and nucleus. Part of euchromatin and transcription regulator complex. Is expressed in several structures, including alimentary system; early conceptus; genitourinary system; limb; and skin. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in hepatocellular carcinoma. Orthologous to human KLF4 (KLF transcription factor 4).
PHENOTYPE: Homozygotes for targeted null mutations die shortly after birth due to a skin defect that results in loss of fluids. Mutants also show a dramatic decrease in the number of goblet cells of the colon. [provided by MGI curators]
