Protein Coding Gene : Rec8 REC8 meiotic recombination protein

Primary Identifier  MGI:1929645 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  14 NCBI Gene Number  56739
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.0.0)

Predicted to enable chromatin binding activity. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including germ cell development; meiosis I; and seminiferous tubule development. Located in kinetochore; lateral element; and male germ cell nucleus. Part of meiotic cohesin complex. Is expressed in several structures, including alimentary system; central nervous system; genitourinary system; respiratory system; and sensory organ. Orthologous to human REC8 (REC8 meiotic recombination protein).
PHENOTYPE: Homozygous null mice are infertile and exhibit small ovaries and testes. Females show absence of ovarian follicles and abnormal meiosis, while males exhibit abnormal chromosome pairing during meiosis, abnormal synaptonemal complex formation, and arrest of male meiosis.
