Protein Coding Gene : Vcan versican

Primary Identifier  MGI:102889 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  13 NCBI Gene Number  13003
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.1.0)

Enables protein phosphatase binding activity. Involved in ureteric bud development. Acts upstream of or within heart development. Located in extracellular matrix. Is expressed in several structures, including central nervous system; embryo mesenchyme; genitourinary system; heart; and jaw. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in intracranial aneurysm. Orthologous to human VCAN (versican).
PHENOTYPE: Homozygotes for an insertional mutation exhibit anterior-posterior segmental defects of the heart, lack endocardial cushions of the conus and atrioventricular region, and die and around embryonic day 10.5. Homozygosity for a cleavage-resistant mutant leads to reduced embryonic survival, syndactyly and enhanced wound healing. [provided by MGI curators]
