Polymorphic Pseudogene : Mx2 MX dynamin-like GTPase 2

Primary Identifier  MGI:97244 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  16 Mgi Type  polymorphic pseudogene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.1.0)

Predicted to enable several functions, including GTP binding activity; GTPase activity; and identical protein binding activity. Involved in negative regulation of viral genome replication; response to type I interferon; and response to virus. Acts upstream of or within response to bacterium. Predicted to be located in cytosol; nuclear membrane; and perinuclear region of cytoplasm. Predicted to be part of nuclear pore. Predicted to be active in several cellular components, including cytoplasm; microtubule; and nucleus. Is expressed in several structures, including genitourinary system; liver; nervous system; sensory organ; and thymus. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in alopecia areata; avian influenza; liver disease; and prostate cancer. Orthologous to several human genes including MX1 (MX dynamin like GTPase 1).
PHENOTYPE: Mx1+ strains do not express MX2 protein. The Mx2 gene in BALB/cJ and CBA/J is interrupted by an open reading frame mutation. Mutagenesis correcting the frameshift permits Mx2 expression in 3T3 cells. This protein did not inhibit influenza virus but conferred resistance to vesicular stomatitis virus. [provided by MGI curators]
specificity  This gene produces a functional protein in some feral mouse strains but C57BL/6J contains a frameshift that inactivates this gene product. A2G, SL/NiA, T9 and CAST/Ei (MX1+) strains do not express MX2 protein. The Mx2 gene in BALB/cJ and CBA/J is interrupted by an open reading frame mutation.
