abstractText  Full text of MNL contribution: M.M. Dickie. New mutations: 7. Torpid. Two abnormally behaving animals were found in a litter of DBA/2J in May 1963. These animals had very slow movements similar to lethargic but the condition was more severe. The animals may lie on their side or back with the head tucked forward, the mouth quivers, and all four feet quiver. When walking the hind feet are often lifted off the surface at the same time and the animal appears to be pulled forward by the front feet. Often when standing at rest one forefoot is raised and quivers. An animal may lie on its back when held in the hand for minutes at a time. The mutants can hear and swim slowly, but cannot hold onto and climb an upright piece of rope. Both sexes are fertile, but males are more productive. Breeding tests indicate that this is a recessive mutation. Tests with lethargic, jolting, and leaner were negative. Tabulation of the F2 data (in coupling) from an outcross to C57BL/6J indicates that the mutant is linked with dilute with 12.3 percent recombination, Further tests to determine the position in linkage group II are in progress. The mutant has been called torpid and the suggested symbol is td.
