Protein Coding Gene : Serpine2 serine (or cysteine) peptidase inhibitor, clade E, member 2

Primary Identifier  MGI:101780 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  1 NCBI Gene Number  20720
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.1.0)

Enables serine-type endopeptidase inhibitor activity and signaling receptor binding activity. Involved in negative regulation of plasminogen activation and negative regulation of platelet aggregation. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including modulation of chemical synaptic transmission; negative regulation of signal transduction; and nervous system development. Located in extracellular region and neuromuscular junction. Is expressed in several structures, including alimentary system; central nervous system; embryo mesenchyme; musculoskeletal system; and reproductive system. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in Alzheimer's disease. Orthologous to human SERPINE2 (serpin family E member 2).
PHENOTYPE: Mice homozygous for a targeted mutation of this gene are viable and healthy but develop epileptic activity as well as reduced theta burst-induced LTP and NMDA receptor-mediated synaptic transmission in the CA1 field of the hippocampus; notably, homozygous mutant males are infertile.
