Protein Coding Gene : Col5a3 collagen, type V, alpha 3

Primary Identifier  MGI:1858212 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  9 NCBI Gene Number  53867
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.1.0)

Enables heparin binding activity. Acts upstream of or within cell-matrix adhesion. Located in collagen-containing extracellular matrix. Part of collagen type V trimer. Is expressed in several structures, including bone; embryo mesenchyme; extraembryonic component; placenta; and tongue. Orthologous to human COL5A3 (collagen type V alpha 3 chain).
PHENOTYPE: Mice homozygous for a null mutation show decreased pancreatic beta cell mass, hyperglycemia, hypoinsulinemia, impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance and impaired glucose uptake. Homozygous females show decreased susceptibility to diet-induced obesity and a thin hypodermal fat layer. [provided by MGI curators]
