Protein Coding Gene : Cd9 CD9 antigen

Primary Identifier  MGI:88348 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  6 NCBI Gene Number  12527
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.1.0)

Enables integrin binding activity. Involved in several processes, including fusion of sperm to egg plasma membrane involved in single fertilization; myoblast fusion involved in skeletal muscle regeneration; and paranodal junction assembly. Acts upstream of or within negative regulation of cell population proliferation. Located in external side of plasma membrane and extracellular exosome. Is expressed in several structures, including alimentary system; heart; nervous system; sensory organ; and urinary system. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in prostate adenocarcinoma. Orthologous to human CD9 (CD9 molecule).
PHENOTYPE: Females homozygous for targeted null mutations are infertile due to lack of sperm-egg fusion. Mice heterozygous for conditional alleles activated in pancreatic cells exhibit reduced tumor growth in a pancreatic tumor mouse model. [provided by MGI curators]
