Protein Coding Gene : Pigr polymeric immunoglobulin receptor

Primary Identifier  MGI:103080 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  1 NCBI Gene Number  18703
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.1.0)

Predicted to enable epidermal growth factor receptor binding activity; polymeric immunoglobulin binding activity; and polymeric immunoglobulin receptor activity. Predicted to be involved in several processes, including cell surface receptor signaling pathway; detection of chemical stimulus involved in sensory perception of bitter taste; and immunoglobulin transcytosis in epithelial cells mediated by polymeric immunoglobulin receptor. Predicted to be located in extracellular space and recycling endosome membrane. Predicted to be part of receptor complex and secretory IgA immunoglobulin complex. Predicted to be active in plasma membrane. Is expressed in large intestine and small intestine. Orthologous to human PIGR (polymeric immunoglobulin receptor).
PHENOTYPE: Nullizygous mice show impaired transepithelial transport of dimeric IgA, increased serum IgA levels and mucosal leakiness. Studies of one null allele show increased susceptibility to mycobacterial infections while another allele causes impaired clearanceof the protozoan parasite Giardia. [provided by MGI curators]
