Located in neuron projection; non-motile cilium; and plasma membrane. Is active in glutamatergic synapse and presynaptic membrane. Is expressed in dorsal root ganglion; epidermis; medulla oblongata basal plate mantle layer; olfactory epithelium; and spinal cord mantle layer. Orthologous to human ANO2 (anoctamin 2).
PHENOTYPE: Mice homozygous for a knock-out allele lack calcium-activated chloride currents in the main olfactory epithelium and vomeronasal organ but normal olfaction in behavioral tasks. [provided by MGI curators]
