Protein Coding Gene : Crygs crystallin, gamma S

Primary Identifier  MGI:1298216 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  16 NCBI Gene Number  12970
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.1.0)

A structural constituent of eye lens. Acts upstream of or within lens development in camera-type eye and morphogenesis of an epithelium. Is expressed in alimentary system; eye; and genitourinary system. Used to study cataract 20 multiple types. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in cataract 20 multiple types. Orthologous to human CRYGS (crystallin gamma S).
PHENOTYPE: Mutations in this gene can cause cataracts and/or disrupted lens fiber cell morphology and organization. Aging mice homozygous for a knock-out allele do not develop cataracts but show focusing defects associated with inefficient clearance of cellular organelles and altered actin distribution.
