Protein Coding Gene : Panx1 pannexin 1

Primary Identifier  MGI:1860055 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  9 NCBI Gene Number  55991
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.1.0)

Enables actin filament binding activity and monoatomic anion channel activity. Involved in monoatomic anion transmembrane transport. Acts upstream of or within positive regulation of cytokine production; response to ATP; and response to ischemia. Located in plasma membrane. Is expressed in several structures, including central nervous system; foregut; limb bud; male reproductive gland or organ; and sensory organ. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in depressive disorder. Orthologous to human PANX1 (pannexin 1).
PHENOTYPE: Mice homozygous for a knock-out allele exhibit impaired macrophage recruitment, YO-PRO-1 dye uptake, ATP release by apoptotic thymocytes, hippocampal neurons, and astrocytes. Mice homozygous for a different knock-out allele exhibit protection from I/R-induced retinal ganglion cell loss. [provided by MGI curators]
