Protein Coding Gene : Nanos2 nanos C2HC-type zinc finger 2

Primary Identifier  MGI:2676627 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  7 NCBI Gene Number  378430
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.1.0)

Enables mRNA binding activity. Involved in several processes, including germ-line stem cell population maintenance; mRNA catabolic process; and negative regulation of meiotic nuclear division. Located in P-body and perinuclear region of cytoplasm. Is expressed in early conceptus; gonad; mesonephros; and telencephalon. Orthologous to human NANOS2 (nanos C2HC-type zinc finger 2).
PHENOTYPE: Whereas homozygous mutant female mice are fertile and show no morphological or functional abnormalities of the ovaries, the testes of homozygous mutant male mice are reduced in weight and devoid of germ cells. The spermatogenic defects appear to be associated with increased apoptosis. [provided by MGI curators]
