Protein Coding Gene : Slc29a1 solute carrier family 29 (nucleoside transporters), member 1

Primary Identifier  MGI:1927073 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  17 NCBI Gene Number  63959
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.1.0)

Enables neurotransmitter transmembrane transporter activity; purine nucleoside transmembrane transporter activity; and uridine transmembrane transporter activity. Involved in neurotransmitter uptake and nucleoside transport. Acts upstream of or within nucleoside transport. Is active in plasma membrane. Is expressed in several structures, including central nervous system; hemolymphoid system; hindlimb phalanx; liver; and skeletal musculature. Used to study alcohol dependence and diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis. Orthologous to human SLC29A1 (solute carrier family 29 member 1 (Augustine blood group)).
PHENOTYPE: Mice homozygous for a targeted null allele exhibit a slightly decreased body weight, increased alcohol preference and alcohol consumption, and reduced hypnotic and ataxic responses to ethanol associated with a reduction in adenosine tone. Adenosine uptake is almost completely abolished in mice homozygous for a knock-out allele. [provided by MGI curators]
