Protein Coding Gene : Soat2 sterol O-acyltransferase 2

Primary Identifier  MGI:1332226 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  15 NCBI Gene Number  223920
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.1.0)

Enables sterol O-acyltransferase activity. Acts upstream of or within cholesterol metabolic process and cholesterol storage. Located in membrane. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in coronary artery disease and hepatocellular carcinoma. Orthologous to human SOAT2 (sterol O-acyltransferase 2).
PHENOTYPE: Homozygous mutant animals exhibit elevated serum triglyceride levels and are resistant to fatty liver, hyperlipidemia, and gallstone development when fed a high fat, high cholesterol diet. When fed a Western diet homozygous mutant animals exhibit elevated HDL levels. [provided by MGI curators]
