Protein Coding Gene : Dmrt1 doublesex and mab-3 related transcription factor 1

Primary Identifier  MGI:1354733 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  19 NCBI Gene Number  50796
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.1.0)

Enables several functions, including DNA-binding transcription activator activity, RNA polymerase II-specific; identical protein binding activity; and transcription cis-regulatory region binding activity. Involved in several processes, including male germ cell proliferation; regulation of nuclear division; and regulation of transcription by RNA polymerase II. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including Sertoli cell development; positive regulation of male gonad development; and positive regulation of meiosis I. Located in cytoplasm and female germ cell nucleus. Is expressed in several structures, including early conceptus; gonad; gonad primordium; and mesonephros. Orthologous to human DMRT1 (doublesex and mab-3 related transcription factor 1).
PHENOTYPE: Males homozygous for null mutations are sterile and exhibit a complete loss of germ cells between postnatal days 7-14, disorganized seminiferous tubules, and degeneration of Leydig cells. Females are normal and fertile. [provided by MGI curators]
