Protein Coding Gene : Map2 microtubule-associated protein 2

Primary Identifier  MGI:97175 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  1 NCBI Gene Number  17756
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.0.0)

Enables microtubule binding activity. Involved in microtubule cytoskeleton organization; negative regulation of axon extension; and regulation of protein localization. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including establishment of cell polarity; microtubule bundle formation; and neuron projection development. Located in several cellular components, including axon; dendrite; and proximal neuron projection. Is active in cell body. Is expressed in several structures, including back skin; central nervous system; maxillary process; peripheral nervous system ganglion; and retina. Orthologous to human MAP2 (microtubule associated protein 2).
PHENOTYPE: Mice homozygous for a knock-out allele exhibit altered contextual memory. Mice homozygous for another knock-out allele display decreased body weight, altered microtubule density and organization in Purkinje cell dendrites, and reduced dendritic length inhippocampal neurons.
