Protein Coding Gene : Casp4 caspase 4, apoptosis-related cysteine peptidase

Primary Identifier  MGI:107700 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  9 NCBI Gene Number  12363
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.0.0)

Enables cysteine-type endopeptidase activity and lipopolysaccharide binding activity. Involved in several processes, including non-canonical inflammasome complex assembly; positive regulation of defense response; and response to bacterium. Acts upstream of or within ectopic germ cell programmed cell death; positive regulation of interleukin-1 beta production; and positive regulation of macrophage cytokine production. Part of non-canonical inflammasome complex. Is active in cytosol. Is expressed in several structures, including gut; lung; metanephros; reproductive system; and ureter. Orthologous to several human genes including CASP4 (caspase 4).
PHENOTYPE: Homozygous mutation of this gene results in decreased levels of serum IL-1alpha and IL-1beta. Mutant animals are resistant to septic shock after injection with LPS. [provided by MGI curators]
