Protein Coding Gene : Prkaca protein kinase, cAMP dependent, catalytic, alpha

Primary Identifier  MGI:97592 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  8 NCBI Gene Number  18747
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.0.0)

Enables several functions, including cAMP-dependent protein kinase activity; ion binding activity; and protein kinase A regulatory subunit binding activity. Involved in several processes, including cellular response to glucagon stimulus; positive regulation of insulin secretion; and regulation of carbohydrate metabolic process. Acts upstream of with a positive effect on protein export from nucleus. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including cellular response to parathyroid hormone stimulus; embryonic morphogenesis; and protein localization to lipid droplet. Located in several cellular components, including acrosomal vesicle; ciliary base; and dendritic spine. Part of cAMP-dependent protein kinase complex. Is active in cytosol and glutamatergic synapse. Is expressed in several structures, including alimentary system; brain; early conceptus; genitourinary system; and musculature. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in adrenal cortical adenoma; congestive heart failure; fibrolamellar carcinoma; and primary pigmented nodular adrenocortical disease. Orthologous to human PRKACA (protein kinase cAMP-activated catalytic subunit alpha).
PHENOTYPE: Homozygous mutant mice are highly susceptible to perinatal lethality. Surviving mice are runted and while spermatogenesis progresses normally, mature sperm shows impaired motility. [provided by MGI curators]
