Protein Coding Gene : Fabp4 fatty acid binding protein 4, adipocyte

Primary Identifier  MGI:88038 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  3 NCBI Gene Number  11770
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.1.0)

Enables hormone receptor binding activity; long-chain fatty acid binding activity; and long-chain fatty acid transmembrane transporter activity. Involved in long-chain fatty acid transport and positive regulation of cold-induced thermogenesis. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including brown fat cell differentiation; cellular response to lithium ion; and cholesterol homeostasis. Located in cytoplasm and nucleus. Is expressed in several structures, including adipose tissue; central nervous system; genitourinary system; gut; and heart. Orthologous to human FABP4 (fatty acid binding protein 4).
PHENOTYPE: Homozygotes for a targeted null mutation exhibit susceptibility to diet-induced obesity, attenuated dibutyryl cAMP-induced adipocyte release of glycerol and free fatty acid, and reduced acute insulin secretion in response to beta-adrenergic stimulation. [provided by MGI curators]
