description | FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.3.0) Enables DNA-binding transcription activator activity, RNA polymerase II-specific; RNA polymerase II cis-regulatory region sequence-specific DNA binding activity; and chromatin binding activity. Involved in positive regulation of transcription by RNA polymerase II. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including positive regulation of osteoclast differentiation; response to muscle stretch; and skeletal muscle cell differentiation. Located in endoplasmic reticulum and nucleus. Part of transcription factor AP-1 complex. Is expressed in several structures, including alimentary system; central nervous system; early conceptus; genitourinary system; and limb. Orthologous to human FOS (Fos proto-oncogene, AP-1 transcription factor subunit). PHENOTYPE: Null mutants are growth-retarded, most dying perinatally. Survivors have osteopetrosis and abnormal tooth eruption, gametogenesis, hemopoiesis, behavior and photoreceptor apoptosis. Hippocampal-specific mutants have seizures and highly excitable neurons.
