Protein Coding Gene : Ldhc lactate dehydrogenase C

Primary Identifier  MGI:96764 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  7 NCBI Gene Number  16833
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.1.0)

Enables L-lactate dehydrogenase activity. Involved in pyruvate catabolic process. Acts upstream of or within ATP biosynthetic process; flagellated sperm motility; and lactate metabolic process. Located in cytoplasm and motile cilium. Is active in cytosol. Is expressed in several structures, including alimentary system; brain; genitourinary system; respiratory system; and sensory organ. Orthologous to human LDHC (lactate dehydrogenase C).
PHENOTYPE: Homozygous male mice are infertile. Spermatogenesis appears normal, but sperm motility decreases rapidly after their release from the epididymus. In vitro fertilization is blocked unless the zona pellucida is removed; even then, the rate of sperm penetration is lower than for wild-type sperm. [provided by MGI curators]
