Protein Coding Gene : Tox thymocyte selection-associated high mobility group box

Primary Identifier  MGI:2181659 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  4 NCBI Gene Number  252838
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.1.0)

Enables chromatin DNA binding activity. Involved in several processes, including alpha-beta T cell lineage commitment; cerebral cortex neuron differentiation; and regulation of positive thymic T cell selection. Acts upstream of or within hematopoietic or lymphoid organ development; lymphocyte differentiation; and positive regulation of natural killer cell differentiation. Located in nucleus. Is expressed in several structures, including alimentary system; genitourinary system; nervous system; sensory organ; and skeleton. Orthologous to human TOX (thymocyte selection associated high mobility group box).
PHENOTYPE: Mice homozygous for a knock-out allele have a severe block in thymic positive selection leading to loss of CD4 T lineage cells, and display decreased NK cell numbers, severely reduced numbers of lymphoid tissue inducer cells, absence of all peripheral lymph nodes, and loss of Peyer's patches.
