Protein Coding Gene : Elf5 E74-like factor 5

Primary Identifier  MGI:1335079 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  2 NCBI Gene Number  13711
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.1.0)

Enables DNA-binding transcription activator activity, RNA polymerase II-specific and RNA polymerase II transcription regulatory region sequence-specific DNA binding activity. Involved in positive regulation of transcription by RNA polymerase II. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including ectodermal cell fate commitment; mammary gland epithelial cell differentiation; and negative regulation of cell differentiation involved in embryonic placenta development. Located in cytoplasm and nucleus. Is expressed in several structures, including alimentary system; extraembryonic component; genitourinary system; integumental system; and respiratory system epithelium. Orthologous to human ELF5 (E74 like ETS transcription factor 5).
PHENOTYPE: Homozygous null mice display embryonic lethality. Embryos homozygous for one null allele failed to develop extraembryonic ectoderm, did not maintain trophoblast stem cells, and had abnormal or absent mesoderm. Mice heterozygous for another allele had impaired lactation and mammary gland development. [provided by MGI curators]
