Protein Coding Gene : Nppa natriuretic peptide type A

Primary Identifier  MGI:97367 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  4 NCBI Gene Number  230899
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.0.0)

Predicted to enable hormone receptor binding activity; neuropeptide hormone activity; and neuropeptide receptor binding activity. Involved in female pregnancy and regulation of blood pressure. Acts upstream of or within cardiac muscle hypertrophy in response to stress; negative regulation of blood pressure; and sodium ion export across plasma membrane. Located in cytoplasm and extracellular space. Is expressed in several structures, including heart and skeletal muscle. Used to study hypertension. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in artery disease (multiple); congestive heart failure; heart conduction disease (multiple); and peritonitis. Orthologous to human NPPA (natriuretic peptide A).
PHENOTYPE: Homozygotes are chronically hypertensive partly due to changes in peripheral resistance and increased central AT1-receptor activation, and show salt-sensitive hypertension and abnormal pulmonary vascular remodeling with increased ventricular mass and muscularization of peripheral pulmonary vessels.
