Protein Coding Gene : Cgas cyclic GMP-AMP synthase

Primary Identifier  MGI:2442261 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  9 NCBI Gene Number  214763
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.1.0)

Enables several functions, including 2',3'-cyclic GMP-AMP synthase activity; poly-ADP-D-ribose modification-dependent protein binding activity; and protein homodimerization activity. Involved in several processes, including cellular response to exogenous dsRNA; intracellular signaling cassette; and regulation of defense response. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including determination of adult lifespan; regulation of T cell activation; and regulation of gene expression. Located in cytosol; nucleus; and plasma membrane. Is expressed in central nervous system; retina inner nuclear layer; and retina outer nuclear layer. Orthologous to human CGAS (cyclic GMP-AMP synthase).
PHENOTYPE: Mice homozygous for a null allele exhibit increased susceptibility to viral infection and abnormal innate immunity. Conditional expression of the p.R241E mutation in microglia leads to reduced spatial learning owing to hippocampal neuron degeneration. [provided by MGI curators]
