abstractText  The mutation, dominant spotting 85 Jackson (Kit<W-85J>), arose spontaneously in a transgenic strain on a pure C57BL/6J background in late 2012. With the transgene bred out of the mutant line, mice heterozygous for this spontaneous mutation still display white spots on their black coats. When heterozygotes were intercrossed the offspring included four black-eyed white pups, presumed homozygous, and seven black mice with white spots out of a total of 18 offspring. Auditory brainstem response analysis on heterozygous mice at 28 days of age did not find any elevated thresholds arising from this mutation. The mutation was mapped to Chromosome 5 between position 67,053,321 bp and 82,943,584 bp (MGSCv37). Exome sequencing identified a C to T transition at Chromosome 5 position 76,048,847 bp (MGSCv37) that is predicted to result in the missense mutation R890W in the Kit gene.
